MATHCOUNTS

The MATHCOUNTS Competition Series is a national program that provides students the opportunity to compete in live, in-person contests against and alongside their peers. Created in 1983, it is the longest-running MATHCOUNTS program and is open to all sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students. Every registered student’s parent has to volunteer on weekly basis for preparation, if not they will be dropped out of the contest. For any questions please contact [email protected].

Math Olympiad stimulates enthusiasm and a love for Mathematics. Its purpose is to introduce important Mathematical concepts, teach major strategies for problem solving, develop Mathematical flexibility in solving problems, strengthen Mathematical intuition, foster Mathematical creativity and ingenuity and provide for the satisfaction, joy, and thrill of meeting challenges. Virginia Math League

Math contests give students an educationally enriching opportunity to participate in an academically- oriented activity and to gain recognition for mathematical achievement. Each contest covers topics appropriate to the contest grade level. The key is to encourage students to enjoy a challenge and to learn from it to find problem-solving discussions stimulating. This challenge is what prompts many youngsters to enjoy puzzle books! The enrichment we provide is a positive experience for students. Prep is done by parents. There will be a next level contest for any sixth grader who earns a perfect score on a first come, first serve basis. Continental Math League

CML is an opportunity to learn mathematics and enjoy it at the same time. Students participating require above-average reading comprehension and analytical reasoning capabilities. Their computational skills should be appropriate to their grade level. Prep is done by parents and materials may be purchased at the CML website above.

National Language Arts League

The contest for 4th grade consists of 35 multiple choice questions appropriate to that grade level. The 5th and 6th Grade contests consist of 50 multiple choice questions based on the following topics: spelling, vocabulary, reading comprehension, analogies, and grammar. We believe our approach to these topics will provide a meaningful as well as enjoyable learning experience for your students. Each contest has a time limit of 35 minutes. Prep is done by parents. National Science League

The contest for 4th grade consists of 35 multiple choice questions appropriate to that grade level. The 5th and 6th grade contests consist of 40 multiple choice questions. The multiple choice questions which comprise each contest are based on factual knowledge as well as students’ understanding of scientific processes. Each Contest has a time limit of 35 minutes. Prep is done by parents and sample material is available at the above website.

MAA AMC 8

The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom learned skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment. National Geography Challenge

  • Venue: Navy Cafeteria
  • Grades: 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th
  • Times: 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM
  • Date: May 1st
  • Registration Cost: $20
  • All the Contests are in multiple choice form.
  • The Grade 2 Contest requires 35 minutes and contains 25 questions.
  • The Grades 3-4 Contest requires 35 minutes and contains 35 questions.
  • The Grades 5-6 Contest requires 35 minutes and contains 40 questions.
  • In addition, grades 6 will receive 10 Research/Assessment Opportunities that can be used throughout the next school year.

National Social Studies League

  • Venue: Navy Cafeteria
  • Grades: 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th
  • Times: 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM
  • Date: May 2nd
  • Registration Cost: $20
  • The contest for grade 3 and 4, 35 questions and grades 5 and 6, 40 questions.
  • These questions are based on topics in American Studies, Geography of the United States, and
  • United States government appropriate to each grade level.
  • The Contest for grades 7, 8, and 9, consisting of 50 questions, deals with these same topic areas with the content of the questions appropriate to those grade levels.
  • There are two contests for Senior High School students- one in American History and the other in World History with the emphasis on Europe.
  • Each of these contests consists of 50 questions.
  • Each contest (for all grade levels mentioned above) consists of multiple choice questions.
  • Each contest has a time limit of 35 minutes and may be comfortably administered within one class period.

Science Olympiad

Science Olympiad is a school-based program that is a wonderful opportunity for students who are interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to improve their understanding of these subjects and work together in teams to learn new skills.
It’s a team endeavor and there are 23 events for teams that cover life sciences, earth sciences, physical sciences, technology, and the nature of science. It is an event run by volunteers and coaches. Parents of registering students must plan on coaching the students for one or more events. As a first time participant, Navy can register a team of 15 students.
